Item | # 0003806555 | Family | Cypraeidae | Name | Cypraea arabica - RUST GLAZE; WWII HISTORY , Linnaeus, 1758 |
Size | 49.3 mm |
Locality | Papua New Guinea |
Note | This beautiful specimen, from a RARE locality, was collected from the wreck of WWII vessel in the Louisidae Archipelago, a centre of activity during the Battle of the Coral Sea, (6-10 May 1942). The rust glaze is so evenly deposited across the entire dorsum and margins as to convey the impression that it could be the typical colour of the species. As a student of both conchology, and World War II, this shell held particular significance for me, and there may exist another collector with an equal interest in exceptional seashells and world history, who will appreciate owning this outstanding specimen. Data: Off Tagula, Vanatinai Islands, Louisiade Archipelago, Milne Bay Province, Papua New Guinea; upon iron substrate, (shipwreck); 10-15 m; dived; 1991. Size: 49.3 mm. Grading: Gem. Provenance: JES Collection; London / Melbourne. |
