Item | # 0003806894 | Family | Cypraeidae | Name | Cypraea vitellus x carneola - HYBRID or RARE PATTERN , Linnaeus, 1758 |
Size | 70.8 mm |
Locality | Philippines |
Note | This highly unusual specimen, at first glance, exhibits characteristics of both vitellus and carneola. Patently vitellus at the margins and ventrum, and lacking the purple dentition of carneola, it seems likely to be a rare form of vitellus. The specimen is of large size, and fully mature, so there is no question of its being sub-adult, awaiting the deposition of dorsal maculae. The specimen also has an atypically inflated, elongate, elegant shape, markedly tapered towards the anterior. As is evident in the above left image, there is one small inclusion to the dorsum – negligible when offset against the unique nature of the specimen. Definitely for the advanced Cypraeidae specialist interested in unusual variants. Data: Tayabas Bay, off San Juan, Batangas, Luzon, Philippines; upon reef substrate; 15 m; dived; 2010. Size: 70.8 mm. Grading: Gem. Provenance: JES Collection; London / Melbourne. |
