Family | Muricidae |
Name | Murex tribulus - EXCEPTIONAL QLD. GIANT , Linnaeus, 1758 |
Size | 126.1 mm |
Locality | Australia |
Note | During the early 1980s the regions around several remote Great Barrier Reef coral cays were dredged for specimen shells, revealing many exceptional examples of species usually seen only from other Indo-Pacific localities. Amongst these were several Murex species, of which I acquired numerous outstanding examples for the JES Collection, but none more impressive than this EXCEPTIONAL GIANT of Murex tribulus, with its perfect, incredibly elongate principal spine – approximately 60 mm in length. Exceedingly rare quality for the species, size, and collection method – PERFECTION, incorporating intact pin-point protoconch. Definitely for the Muricidae specialist; those interested in rare localities; or the collector of giant-sized shells. Data: Lodestone Reef, Queensland, Australia; upon sand substrate; 60-80 m; trawled; 1984. Size: 126.1 mm. Grading: Gem. Provenance: JES Collection; London / Melbourne. |
