| Note | An exceptional GIANT of the Michaelmas Cay form of this endemic Queendland species. Rare quality for such advanced size and age. Hypermature, with markedly thickened shell walls; extremely solid and heavy, only fully appreciated in the hand. Beautiful subtle colours: pale ochre-apricot maculations across a pinkish white ground. The locality is now protected as the Michaelmas and Upolo Cays National Park, and no fresh specimens will be available in future. A wisemani for the Volutidae connoisseur. Data: Michaelmas Cay, Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, Australia; upon coral sand substrate; 6-8 m; dredged; 1988. Size: 76.2 mm. Grading: Gem. Provenance: JES Collection; London / Melbourne. |
