Note | Superb and red pigmented example of this only cowrie found in Californian waters. Dark orange/red dorsal blotch bordered by a black undulating halo and dark pumpkin orange margins underscore this unique specimen. The marginal red/orange pigment wraps lateral walls that transform into an eggshell white base. A modest sized and standout visually impressive specimen. Taken by Scuba diver among marine growth at 22-23 meters on the Star of Scotland shipwreck, off the Santa Monica, California by the late/great Paul Kanner. The specimen has some glazed inclusions on the columellar posterior ramp, subnacre blemishes, a nacre loss area on the columellar later wall and ramp and a subtle fold mid-dorsum. Grade: F++. |
