| Note | A truly MAGNIFICENT specimen of the largest known Casmaria, collected half a century ago, during the ‘old days’ of Hawai’ian availability. The species is rare, with around 80% of the shells stated to be C. kalosmodix across the internet literature being, in fact, other species – usually C. erinaceus. Its relatively enormous size is the principal characteristic separating it from all false pretenders, along with its lack of apertural spines; tall spire; and distinctive external surface pattern. Although always dead-collected – coming from deep-water lobster pots – the current specimen retains its living colour, which, in conjunction with its exceedingly beautiful pattern, renders it the FINEST specimen I have ever encountered. It is also of remarkble QUALITY, incorporating PERFECT apertural lip, (with no artificial smoothing); PERFECT siphonal canal; and PERFECT apex. In addition to the above-mentioned merits, the shell has impressive provenance, having passed through three famous connoisseurial collections: 1) John McForland; 2) Chris K. Takahashi; 3) JES, and the original Takahashii and JES labels accompany the specimen, the former indicating the McForland provenance. The specimen also comes from a very rare locality, now protected as part of the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument, with no fresh specimens being available in future. (Note that Midway Atoll is the only island of the Hawai’ian Archipelago not to constitute an element of the US state of Hawai’i.) Definitely for the advanced Cassidae specialist whose collection yet lacks this rare and remarkable species.
