Item | # 0003839830 | Family | Ranellidae | Name | Fusitriton magellanicus retiolus - RARE QUALITY; DEEP-WATER , (Hedley, 1914) |
Size | 127.3 mm |
Locality | Australia |
Note | During the 1980s, extreme deep-water trawling was undertaken off the Sydney region of New South Wales, revealing several spectacular shells, one of which was this eastern Australian subspecies of a wide-spread species. Unlike its counterparts from other localities, the NSW form exhibits a beautiful pale pink shell, and a high external gloss. Unfortunately, the overwhelming majority of the examples obtained exhibited one, or all three aspects of detraction: substrate discoloration / encrustation; damage sustained during life; or substantial trawl damage. The current specimen, by contrast, is a very rare exception – one of the finest I have ever encountered. Immaculate shell; not a single growth disruption; and PERFECT apertural lip and siphonal canal. (Note that the loss at the apex is a feature of all mature specimens, and in no way a flaw.) Specimens have not been collected since the 1980s, and are now obtainable only from choice old collections, and are almost never of this quality. A rare opportunity for a Ranellidae specialist to acquire an outstanding example of this uncommon subspecies. Data: Off Sydney, New South Wales, Australia; upon sand/mud substrate; 1,000-1,500 m; trawled; 1982. Size: 127.3 mm. Grading: Gem. Provenance: JES Collection; London / Melbourne. |
