| Note | Over the past ten years or so, when we have been collecting in deep water on the edge of the continental shelf off the lower west coast, we have run across a form of venusta that is quite different. I have used the name "primoidea" in referring to these shells. In my opinion they maybe the descendants of an ancient venusta that was previously present in abundance farther north. We have found one live and a number of dead specimens on the Hartog Shelf.
They have very prominent pinched siphons and have narrow apertures with fairly fine teeth. They are quite different to all other venusta including typical bakeri. Over the years we have collected very limited numbers of this form. These shells are constantly smaller than bakeri and are mauve grey in colour rather than pink white. They often have dark patterned dorsa with a mantle line. This specimen is unusual in that it lacks this feature.
Found during April 2025 in 195 metres of water south west of Lancelin, Western Australia.
Graded Fine+ as the shell has a growthy dorsum and healed dorsal nacre chips.
These shells are very uncommon and we do not find many quality shells. Most we find are damaged by attempted crab and fish predication. |
