Family | ECHINOIDEA |
Name | Microcyphus keiensis , Mortensen, 1942 |
Size | 35.6 mm |
Locality | China |
Note | The Microyphus keiensis is a rather small, but already well sized regular sea urchin of the family TEMNOPLEURIDAE. It lives from the China Sea south to the Philippines, although, we never even got a single one. We have a single photo of a purple 22 mm specimen from Balut Island, so it seems truly to live in the south of the Archipel. But the large majority are greenish, sometimes with tints of brown. Despite its relatively small size this is definitely one of the most magnificent noble urchins of the Indo-Pacific and its rarity contributes to place it amongst the most desirable ones.
South China .Sea Trawled by fishermen from offshore Wenzhou in deep water.
