Item | # 0003863742 |
Family | Volutidae |
Name | Volutaconus calcarelliformis - Ultra rare , Wells and Morrison 2003 |
Size | 83 mm |
Locality | Western Arufura Sea |
Note | Probably the rarest of the volutaconus group. Virtualy an unattainable species from the deep waters in the Remote N/W of Australia. Trawled from depth around 200 metres during some fishing exploration last year. It’s been in my personal collection. In very good condition for a crabbed shell. Good orange colour and natural gloss. There’s a small chip on the anterior canal but the main lip is complete intact. Spire and protoconch are really good except a tiny drill hole on the side of the third whorl and another two attempted . Very tiny and only seen from bottom view. Probably the best condition I have ever seen one of these in . I know of no live taken specimens and the few I have seen have been in very poor condition . This is as good as any of the few specimens that exist get. One for the serious volute collectors. The photo forms part of the description and says it all. |
