Item | # 0003867491 |
Family | Cypraeidae |
Name | Zoila aurata aureabasis - Magic Tiny Aureabasis !! , L. Raybaudi 1979 |
Size | 49.7 mm |
Locality | Bernier Island, WA |
Note | Aureabasis is a name used by Raybaudi to describe a limited number of aurata he acquired from Taiwanese trawlers that had gold rather than cream bases. Few specimens are known and they are very rarely available to acquire.
This specimen is one of a very limited specimens we have found. It was taken from a geodia sponge in 110 metres of water west of Bernier Island in August 2024. Dorsally it looks like a typical aurata with mottled tan spots on a cream dorsum, but when it is turned over its base is dark orange gold in colour. It has apricot margins with tan spots and gold siphon trim.
Very few aurata exist with a size less than 50mm, let alone a specimen with a vivid red gold base like this specimen. It is a very special little shell. Graded Fine+++ due to some soft growth irregularity. |
