| Note | One very nice and large specimen of the rare Fissurella costata, one of the large species of Fissurella endemic to the southeastern Pacific. This species lives in the subtidal in areas with surf and big waves and thus it is difficult to collect in situ. Large Fissurella species are edible (and very tasty), and so are caught by fishermen, collected with hooks and often damaged. This particular specimen has a nice shell, with a natural (lightly cleaned) dorsum covered with calcareous and red algae but with no scurria scars or other damages, it can be cleaned to reveal the nice radial ribs and a white marble-like dorsum. It has a nice border with a few small chips as can be seen in the images. As large Fissurella are commercially exploited in the area they are nowadays more uncommon, and this particular species is rare. This is an opportunity to obtain a rare and nice specimen from a difficult-to-get species for a low initial price. |
