| Item | # 0003932742 |
| Family | Cypraeidae |
| Name | Naria ocellata - smallpox |
| Size | 17.3 x 14.4 mm |
| Locality | Maldives |
| Note | Beautiful specimen of the ocellata diseased form, also called 'Quasimodo' by some. Shells for this form are usually pretty ugly; this particular specimen is the most attractive I have seen. Distribution of the dorsal humps is resonably symmetrical, round shape pronounced, dorsal gloss as good as I have seen in this form. The base is dull, I suspect as a consquence of the combination of disease and hard handling. I found this shell in a basket of ocellata offered to turists in Malè during my first-ever diving trip in tropical seas, back in 1979. Although the shop owner maintained that the ocellata he was selling were local, I cannot be sure of the Maldivian origin since the shop was also offering shells most likely collected in Sri Lanka.
