A MAGNIFICENT MURICID FROM WEST AFRICA. (Original text by G. T. Poppe) And seldom seen in collections worldwide: the Jaton flavidus. We found 11 photographs and a drawing in the literature, but 4 of these are from the holotype, which reduces the number of figured shells to 7. Most have a not such a nicely developed fringes around the aperture. In fact, the only specimen that can rival with the present shell in beauty is the Houart specimen from Goree shown in Apex 12(2-3) of 1997. While most ranges given in the literature are "West Africa", a few refer to the Bay of Goree, on the southeastern tip of Dakar, and this is also where this shell comes from, as Hann Bel-Air is almost in front of Goree Island. This specimen has some micro holes on the top whorls and the protoconch touched as can be seen on the photographs. But these micro defects disappear when viewing the great qualities in shape and coloration. Especially the latter is quite fantastic with a soft warm brown enhanced with a chocolate fleck and a dark streak on the dorsum. Dark spots on the tiny varices. We found only one piece in the Rice collection up till now, Tom traveled personally to Senegal in the past.
