OF GREAT APPEAL TO MURICOLOGISTS: A CLASSIC FROM WESTERN AUSTRALIA. (Original text by G. T. Poppe) Muricologists are excited about the Haustellum wilsoni. Apparently an uncommon and even rare species from Western Australia. The rarity is most likely true, as we did not get another wilsoni arriving in Conchology, Inc. for by now 19 years and more than a million shells later. This piece I should call average in size compared to the 23 shells shown in the literature. It looks good, but has some microholes near the aperture, hard to see on the photographs. Very acceptable in quality, as even very good authors figured shells with a very broken off shiphonal canal: Kaicher (1973-1992), Fair (1976), d'Attilio & Old (1971), Robin (2008), Houart (2014) and on the website of the Western Australian museum (2014) all photographed pieces with a part of the shell missing. This is about a third of the shells shown in books, so the present piece, despite the minor defects, comes out princely in quality. Out from a vintage European collection. Most literature records give Western Australia as a locality. More specific records mention off Dunsborough, Bunbury, Jurian Bay, Freemantle and Augusta. So, visibly this sought after beauty has a very limited range around Cape Leeuwin, between Geographe Bay and Augusta, on the southwestern tip of the Australian continent. There are no recent sales of this species we could trace, except for one damaged shell. The last sales were from 2018 and before and quoted most often prices between 350 and 550 euro. Australia.
