Item# 0003945344
FamilyFissurellidae
NameFissurella maxima - Very Nice, Selected , G. B. Sowerby I, 1834
Size112.5 mm
LocalityCaldera, northern Chile
NoteOne large, live-taken, very nice and colorful specimen of Fissurella maxima, the largest species of Fissurellidae. This species lives on rocks, usually near and under forests of giant Lessonia algae. Large Fissurella species in Chile are caught by fishermen, collected with hooks and almost always damaged. The dorsum of the shell is always covered by calcareous algae, vermetids, boring polychaetes and other epibionts, particularly Scurria species. It is currently difficult to obtain nice colorful specimens like this one. This one was collected recently by fishermen, and it is in very good condition for the species and the size, with a single chip in the border of the shell and with a very nice cleaned dorsum (lightly oiled) and with no Scurria scars or boreholes. A very low initial price for a very nice and showy specimen of Fissurella.
