Umbilia armeniaca - verawestralis form , (Verco, 1912)
Size
73.2 mm
Locality
Walpole, Western Australia
Note
Over the years we have put considerable effort into looking for armeniaca on our south coast. In the area between Walpole and Israelite Bay we have found a form of armeniaca that does not fit with andreyi, clarksoni or type armeniaca from the Great Australian Bight. They have rich peach bases, speckled dorsa and dark siphon trim. We have taking the liberty of referring to them as "verawestralis" or true westralica in Latin. This shell was collected from 240 metres of water south of Walpole during November 2025. We have collected less than twenty specimens in the past 15 years and most have been dead collected. Beautiful white shell covered in dark tan blotches with an obvious mantle line and dark beauty spot. The glossy intense apricot sides and bright peach base are a standout! Graded Fine+++ as it has very minor silt inclusions in its nacre and a nacre stress line on its anterior columnar flange that can be seen in the basal photo.
