At almost 300 mm, this outstanding specimen of the RARE, GIANT deep-water QUEENSLAND form, exhibits the most well-formed and beautiful pattern I have ever encountered in this variety. Characteristic markedly inflated ovate form, enhancing its monumental presence. The variety is worthy of a form or varietal name, as it is quite distinct from typical southern examples, and, when one experiences one of these giants in person, it becomes readily apparent just how distinct they are. These incredible Queensland giants have become much coveted ‘collector’s items’ amongst Volutidae specialists. A product of the legendary 1980s Queensland trawls, and never collected since. Always rare, but now exceedingly so, and only obtainable when deaccessioned from important Australian collections. The ONLY specimen of this form of the JES Collection. Data: Off Sandy Cape, Fraser Island, Wide Bay-Burnett Region, Queensland, Australia; upon sand/rubble substrate; dredged; 80-100 m; 1981. Size: c.290 mm. Grading: Fine++ (one restricted loss to apertural lip, readily discernible in above image). Provenance: JES Collection; London / Melbourne.
