| Note | This MAGNIFICENT ultra-large specimen of the deep-water, solid, broad western Victorian form, is published in the recent, seminal work ‘A Conchological Iconograhpy of Living Ericusa’; p.54; pl.31; fig.E. In addition to its importance as a published example, the specimen is of exceedingly RARE QUALITY for this typically rough deep-water form, with a PERFECT siphonal canal. This phenomenon is far rarer than most will appreciate. Exceedingly few ultra-large, hypermature examples specimens have the straight termination of the columellar anterior canal intact. Characteristic markedly broad, inflated whorls. Hypermature: extremely solid and heavy, with greatly thickened shell walls. Dense and spectacular pattern of reddish ochre axial zigzag markings, across a rich pale ochre-cream ground. Definitely for the advanced Volutidae specialist, or dedicated collector of giant-sized shells seeking a first-rate example of this seldom offered form. Data: Off Port MacDonnell, Limestone Coast, South Australia, Australia; upon reef substrate; 80-100 m; craypot; 1986. Size: 193.6 mm. Grading: Gem. Provenance: JES Collection; London / Melbourne. |
