This is one of my favorite cowries—a truly exceptional specimen that embodies the solid elegance collectors seek in a prime Cypraeidae. A remarkably heavy and thick-shelled example, it displays an arresting dorsal pattern of grey, bronze, and golden maculations reminiscent of leopard skin. Typically, the dorsum is ornamented with distinct black spotting; in this particular specimen, delicate bluish “ocelli” (still visible under proper light) add an uncommon and highly desirable chromatic nuance. From my personal collection, it was preserved for over two decades, carefully stored away from light to prevent fading and to maintain the integrity of its natural pigmentation. The aperture is beautifully highlighted by the characteristic orange blotch, providing striking contrast against its deep black dentition—an aesthetic combination that enhances its visual impact in any serious collection. Collected in the year 2000 by shrimp trawlers operating off the waters of the La Guajira Peninsula, Colombia, this specimen predates the implementation of restrictions on bottom trawling introduced in the early 2000s to protect vulnerable marine species. As a result, comparable examples today are encountered almost exclusively in long-established collections, making fresh-to-market specimens increasingly scarce. A substantial, visually captivating, and historically contextualized cowry—an outstanding opportunity for the discerning international collector seeking quality, rarity, and provenance in a single lot.
