| Item | # 0004035756 | | Family | Conidae | | Name | Conus ammiralis temnes - RARE; ENDEMIC QLD.; BIG , Iredale, 1930 |
| Size | 63.8 mm |
| Locality | Australia |
| Note | This MAGNIFICENT ULTRA-LARGE specimen of this endemic Queensland subspecies – the LARGEST and FINEST of the JES Collection – was collected over half a century ago, from a RARE locality. Characteristic ‘bold white blotches being present, with dark brown linear stripes, the median band bearing two interrupted lines of brown on a cream ocellated ground’, as per Iredale’s original description. Not freshly collected for decades, and now extremely difficult to obtain, especially at this size and quality, coming only from the choicest old Australian collections. The specimen was formerly in the renowned Robert & Dorothy Brown collection, of Yeppoon, and the original 1974 Brown label accompanies the specimen. Definitely for the advanced Conidae specialist whose collection yet lacks a first-rate BIG specimen of this seldom offered form. Data: Off Cape Capricorn, Curtis Island, Gladstone Region, Queensland, Australia; upon reef substrate; 4-6 m; dived; 1974. Size: 63.8 mm. Grading: Gem. Provenance: 1) R.T. & D.A. Brown, Yeppoon; 2) JES Collection; London / Melbourne. |
