| Item | # 0004036301 | | Family | Cypraeidae | | Name | Cypraea limacina facifer monstrans - QLD. GIANT; RARE LOC. , Iredale, 1935 |
| Size | 32.7 mm |
| Locality | Australia |
| Note | An EXCEPTIONAL specimen of the GIANT ‘monstrans’ form, from a RARE QUEENSLAND LOCALITY. Characteristic broadly ovate form; well-developed dorsal pustules; deep terminal cavities and crevices; and coarse, well-developed dentition. Thick, resplendent gloss. Beautiful subtle colour: pale purplish chocolate dorsum, decorated with large, raised white pustules. Hypermature: extremely solid for size, with pronounced marginal callosity, and distinct periphery. The locality has been long-protected, with no fresh specimens having been available for around three decades, nor will any be available in future. Now obtainable only from choice old collections. Definitely for the advanced Cypraeidae specialist seeking a first-rate example of this very seldom offered Queensland form. NOTE: Iredale described ‘facifer’ as a full species, and made the further subspecific distinction of ‘monstrans’ for an ultra-large form, with well-developed dorsal pustules, from certain Queensland islands. Data: Off Myora, North Stradbroke Island, Queensland, Australia; upon reef substrate, in coral crevice; 1-2 m; dived; 1981. Size: 32.7 mm. Grading: Gem. Provenance: JES Collection; London / Melbourne. |
