| Item | # 0004044467 |
| Family | Muricidae |
| Name | Chorus giganteus - Hard to obtain , (R. P. Lesson, 1831) |
| Size | 87.5 mm |
| Locality | San Antonio, central Chile |
| Note | Dived at 20 m by fishermen. Very rare in central Chile, this species is currently facing extinction, as its populations in southern Chile are heavily exploited. Chorus giganteus is the only extant species of the genus Chorus, which had several species in the Miocene and Pliocene of Chile and PerĂº. This is also the largest species in the genus, as most fossil species had rather smaller shells. This is currently a surprisingly difficult species to obtain. Quality of the shell is regular (has some defects and a chipped lip) but nice for the species. This specimen was collected alive but, alas, it no preserves its operculum. This specimen is of the variety with feeble axial sculpture and noticeable and darker spiral cords, as can be seen in the images. |
