Note

One very nice and rather small specimen (about 51 mm size with spines and about 23 mm size of the test) of the very rare and hard to get (I usually obtain about 4-7 specimens per year) subtidal urchin Arbacia spatuligera with spines. This species is naturally rare, and they live from 20 m up to about 200 m, however, most of them are obtained from about 35 to 70 m depth, in rocky outcrops. Apparently, there are two varieties for this species, and this one from the southern variety with weaker sculpture. This specimen was collected alive by divers from central Chile at 25 m depth, and it is in excellent condition for the species, having no damages or erosion to the shell and preserving all (or almost all) their spines. These specimens are of a darker hue of brown (with some purplish when fresh) that other specimens which I have obtained which are paler. These were lightly cleaned, but can be cleaned at perfection, and they were very carefully dried, preserving its aristotle lantern. An interesting and very difficult-to-get Natural History Item from the southeastern Pacific.
