In my long career I have acquired, and/or handled the sale of numerous major collections throughout the world. One of the earliest collections from which I acquired many specimens was that of the Paleontological Research Laboratory, whose extensive Cypraeidae reference collection was largely acquired by myself for the JES Collection during the 1980s. This excellent collection contained many varieties and forms from uncommon localities which are now extremely difficult to obtain. The current large and beautiful specimen of a South African form of chinensis came from the restricted locality of Vetch’s Reef, (or Vetchie’s Reef), a relatively shallow, artifical reef, constructed in 1860, consisting of compacted rubble. Large and spectacular chinensis were collected from the population existing here in the 1960s, whence the current specimen comes. Characteristic broadly ovate form; wide aperture; and lacking the labral groove of variolaria. The specimen formerly constituted No.1004 in the collection of the Paleontological Research Laboratory, and the historical original label accompanies the specimen, (see above left image). Data: Vetch’s Reef, Durban, Natal, KwaZulu, South Africa; upon reef substrate, under slab; 3 m; dived; 1969. Size: 34.9 mm. Grading: Gem. Provenance: JES Collection; London / Melbourne.
