FamilyCypraeidae
NameCypraea moneta tuberculosa - ULTRA-BIG; RARE QLD. LOC , Quoy & Gaimard, 1834
Size30.7 mm
LocalityAustralia
NoteAn EXCEPTIONAL ultra-large specimen of the GREAT BARRIER REEF form, from a rare locality, exhibiting markedly broad rhomboidal form; extremely well-developed tubercules; and hyper-developed dentition, creating a knobby, Muracypraea-like ventrum. Hypermature, with extreme marginal and ventral callosity, akin to rostration, and great weight and solidity. PERFECTION. Beautiful subtle colour. Not freshly collected for decades, and, as the locality is now protected under the Capricornia Cays National Park, no fresh specimens will be available in future. A FAVOURITE moneta of the JES Collection for the Cypraeidae specialist interested in unusual and difficult to obtain variants. Data: North Reef, Capricorn Group, Capricorn and Bunker Group, Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, Australia; upon coral reef substrate, under dead coral slab, at extreme seasonal low tide; 1978. Size: 30.7 mm. Grading: Gem. Provenance: JES Collection; London / Melbourne.
