This superb ULTRA-LARGE specimen, from the very early years of deep-water southern US trawling, is of exemplary quality for this usually very rough, deep-water, trawled species, incorporating preservation of the protoconch. Rich earth colours. Superior shape and pattern to that of the majority of examples. Slender and elongate form. VERY RARE LOCALITY: South-West Pass is a deep-water channel in the mouth of the Mississippi River, flowing into the Gulf of Mexico. Not freshly collected for over half a century, and now obtainable like this only when deaccessioned from important old collections. Data: South-West Pass, Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana, USA; upon sand/mud/detritus substrate; 30-50 m; trawled; 1968. Size: 187 mm. Grading: Fine++ (apertural lip lightly smoothed, carried out as a matter of course in the 1960s). Provenance: JES Collection; London / Melbourne.
