| Item | # 0004089146 | | Family | Muricidae | | Name | Phyllonotus erythrostomus - 145.6 mm 1970s GIANT , Swainson, 1831 |
| Size | 145.6 mm |
| Locality | Mexico |
| Note | An incredible GIANT, collected over half a century ago, from the very ‘old days’ of Mexican availability. Not collected at this size for many decades, and now obtainable only from choice old collections. Exemplary quality for the species and size, with no erosion, and excellent preservation of the apex, and extremely elongate siphonal canal. Perfectly clean, with nor encrustation. As was often the case with 1970s examples, the aperture exhibits traces of resin – applied as a matter of course to Mexican specimens from the ‘old days’. Expertly recleaned for this auction, with bright pinkish white exterior, and vivid pink apertural interior. Definitely for the dedicated collector of giant-sized shells. Data: Sea of Cortez, off Loreto, Loreto, Baja California Sur, Mexico; upon reef substrate; 10-20 m; dived; 1971. Size: 145.6 mm. Grading: Fine+++. Provenance: JES Collection; London / Melbourne. |
