| Family | Muricidae |
| Name | Thaisella chocolata - Very Nice , (Duclos, 1832) |
| Size | 82.1 mm |
| Locality | Caldera, northern Chile |
| Note | One very nice specimen of the edible muricid Thaisella chocolata. This species is collected by divers in 4-20 m depth off the rocky coasts of northern Chile and southern PerĂº, and it is a rather uncommon species. This species is rare in collections as their shells are almost always covered with cirripedians and other epibionts, and are very ugly because they live in rocky areas with strong currents. This particular specimen is rather nice for the species and it has just small defects, as can be seen in the images, and most importantly it preserves its original operculum (which is almost always tossed by the fishermen). This specimen was collected recently by a diver at shallow depth. A very low initial price for a species which is difficult to obtain for collections and in excellent condition for the species, and with its original operculum!. |
