| Item | # 0004149835 |
| Family | ECHINOIDEA |
| Name | Arbacia spatuligera - very rare , (Valenciennes, 1846) |
| Size | 43.4 mm |
| Locality | Northern Chile |
| Note | One very nice specimen of the very rare and hard to obtain (I usually obtain about 4-7 specimens per year) subtidal urchin Arbacia spatuligera. This species is naturally rare, and they live from 20 m up to about 200 m in northern Chile, however, most of them are obtained from about 35 to 70 m depth, in rocky outcrops. This specimen was collected alive by a diver in northern Chile, and it is in excellent condition, having no damages or erosion in the shell. This is the test which was carefully cleaned with soft brushes and hand soap (no bleach), but it can be cleaned to perfection with some patience. This specimen retains its aristotle's lamp intact and I can add almost all of their spines (not figured here, but they were carefully extracted) if you are interested. I only use soft brushes and hand soap to not alter the colors or texture of the shell. An interesting and very difficult-to-get Natural History Item from the southeastern Pacific. I can send high resolution images of this specimen if needed. |
