| Note | Amoria kawamurai (sometimes spelled kawamurai) is an exceptionally rare and highly sought-after species of predatory marine sea snail in the family Volutidae. Also known as Kawamura's Volute, it is native to the deep offshore waters of northwestern Australia and the Arafura Sea.Key Facts About Amoria kawamuraiAppearance: It is widely considered one of the most exquisite species in the volute family. Its glossy, fusiform shell features a striking, vivid pattern of regularly spaced, wavy chocolate axial lines against a pale background. It generally grows to about 80 to 100 mm in length.Discovery & Rarity: The shell was accidentally discovered in the early 1970s as deep-water by-catch by Taiwanese fishing vessels working in the Arafura Sea, off northwestern Australia. While initially available in small quantities, the exact deep-water location was never mapped or found again. Consequently, A. kawamurai is extremely rare, making it a highly prized and elusive prize for shell collectors and malacologists.Habitat: Specimens have been dredged from depths ranging roughly between 100 and 300 meters on soft mud and sand substrates.Taxonomy: It was officially described by the eminent Japanese malacologist Takashige Habe in 1975. He dedicated the species to the renowned Japanese shell collector Ryosuke Kawamura. Depending on the taxonomic authority, it is sometimes classified as a subspecies of Amoria grayi.Because of its extreme scarcity, specimens of A. kawamurai very rarely enter the private market, and when they do, they are typically sourced from historical trawler collections or specialized Conchology dealers. |
