An INCREDIBLE, rugged, old age GIANT, of EXTREMELY RARE SIZE, even for the now long gone days of availability. Not freshly collected for over half a century, and virtually impossible to obtain at this size now, with the majority of such giants reposing within public institutions. For those who have never experienced such a giant in person, the shell will come as a revelation, exhibiting the distinctive features of the species at extremely advanced age: a pronounced, angulate whorl periphery; an outwardly recurved apertural lip; and an absence of pattern upon the body whorl. Always a rough species in old age, the current specimen exhibits a couple of predatory marks, and restricted trawl loss at the anterior, yet its merit is its size. Retention of the delicate, oversized protoconch. Completely NATURAL apertural lip – very important to the connoisseur – as almost all specimens from the 1960s-1970s had their lips artificially smoothed as a matter of course. RARE LOCALITY. An extremely rare opportunity for an advanced Volutidae specialist, or dedicated collector of giant-sized shells. Data: Grand Lake region of Gulf of Mexico, off Cameron, Cameron Parish, Louisiana, U.S.A.; upon sand/mud/detritus substrate; 60-90 m; trawled; 1965. Size: c. 230 mm. Grading: Fine+.
