| Item | # 0004190650 | | Family | Muricidae | | Name | Murexul oxytatus - RARE COLOUR / QUALITY , Smith, 1938 |
| Size | 34.5 mm, w/o |
| Locality | U.S.A. |
| Note | An EXCEPTIONAL large specimen of the FLORIDIAN form, exhibiting extremely rich and truly beautiful colour. RARE QUALITY for this reef-dwelling species: all varical spines intact; pin-point protoconch intact; elongate, ultra-delicate siphonal canal intact. The specimen was collected by the late Thomas Honker – a great diver, dealer, and close personal friend, with whom I exchanged vast amounts of Caribbean for endemic Australian shells respectively during the 1980s-1990s. As I acquired several superb specimens of this species from Honker under a single label, no original Honker label accompanies the specimen, but Honker provenance is established via the LOCALITY, from which Honker was the sole expert at finding this elusive species at the time. The specimen is one of the FINEST ever obtained by Honker. No longer freshly collected, and now obtainable only from choice old collections. A ‘BEST of the BEST’ example for the Muricidae connoisseur. Data: Off Boca Raton, Palm Beach County, Florida, USA; upon sand/rubble substrate, at night; 42 m; dived; 1989. Size: 34.5 mm. Grading: Gem; w/o. Provenance: JES Collection; London / Melbourne. |
