Coronula diadema - Traveller from Afar !!! , Linnaeus, 1767
Size
48.2 mm
Locality
Cape Cuvier, WA
Note
To the west of Coral Bay and Shark Bay we occasionally find these barnacles laying on the bottom. We have identified them as Coronula diadema a barnacle that is found on Hump Back Whales. I believe that these are Antarctic species that cannot tolerate subtropical waters and are shed by whales when the shells die. We don't see many but every now and again we find a specimen laying on sand. This specimen was collected in May 2026 from sand in 248 metres west of Cape Cuvier. A lost Traveler who has lost it's Ride !!!
