NoteThis item includes a sub-fossil satiata and a dead Cypraea ketyana lutea intermediate. They were found on the same day and location in 118 metres of water west of the northern end of Dirk Hartog Island during June 2026. Shells that die in deep water dissolve back into sea water rather than wear away with wave action. This starts as nacre craze and develops into a regular pattern of pin holes. This occurs as the solubility of calcium carbonate increases with pressure and depth. The lutea exhibits an advanced stage in this process. The rosselli on the other hand I believe is an recently exhumed ice age fossil that has suffered abrasion from wave action when sea water levels were much lower. This is why I believe there are two lineages of rosselli present in the Hartog Shelf and that significant lateral migration of Zoila has occurred in the inter-glacial periods when high sea levels reconnect isolated ice age coastal embayments. Living rosselli at this location are quite different being very heavy flared flatter shells.
