| Note | I offer an exceptional specimen of each of the three forms of Umbilia capricornica in this sale for direct comparison. SPECIMEN 1: The smaller, ‘delicate’ form, exhibiting finer shell walls at maturity than the other two forms, and a paler palette. Many examples of this form were collected in a subadult state. Rarely do we encounter a HYPERMATURE example exhibiting the elegance of form of the current specimen. Beautiful, subtle colour, incorporating a delicate pinkish tinge to the dorsal ground, and dusky apricot at the terminals. Pronounced marginal callosity, visibly encircling the entire perimeter of the shell when viewed in dorsal perspective. Prominent dorsal ridging. Devoid of the typical inclusions which detract from many examples, with perfectly clean dentition. A product of the legendary 1980s Queensland trawls – never collected since – and now obtainable only from choice old collections. Data: Off eastern coast of East Cay, Swain Reefs, Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, Australia; upon sand/rubble substrate, amongst sponges; 60-80 m; trawled; 1983. Size: 66.2 mm. Grading: Fine+++.
