| Note | I offer an exceptional specimen of each of the three forms of Umbilia capricornica in this sale for direct comparison. SPECIMEN 3: An OUTSTANDING GIANT specimen of a rare, geographically restricted form, intermediate with petilirostris, (the latter generally occurring at slightly greater depth; being typically slightly larger; and exhibiting a more spherical body). Truly SPECTACULAR MARGINS, exhibiting a proliferation of large, supremely well-formed caramel maculae, arrayed in a pattern of the highest aesthetic merit. Hypermature, with greatly thickened shell walls, and consequent weight and solidity. Exemplary quality for the species, and collection method. A product of the legendary 1980s Queensland trawls – never collected since – and now obtainable only from choice old collections. Specimens of this rare form are now highly-prized ‘collector’s items’. Definitely for the highly advanced Umbilia specialist. Data: Off Lady Musgrave Island, Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, Australia; upon sand substrate; 120-240 m; trawled; 1982. Size: 80.5 mm. Grading: Fine+++. Provenance: JES Collection; London / Melbourne. |
