| Item | # 0004231962 |
| Family | Cypraeidae |
| Name | Naria erosa chlorizans - SUPERIOR FORM , Melville 1888 |
| Size | 41.4 mm |
| Locality | Noumea, New Caledonia |
| Note | Exceptional specimen with mega thick/ inflated/ flared and calloused margins, superior cylindrical form, exaggerated rostration without the typical dark botches on either margin as seen in most specimens. Hyperglazed, uniquely tinted perfect extremities and a narrow aperture with strong teeth. The base and margins are eggshell beige and the beautiful dorsal pattern pigmented in remarkable ocellating merigold/buff brown and cream white sports. The dorsal line is prominent, splitting and defining two shades of the dorsal pattern. Top drawer specimen and hard to match morphologically. It is a far superior specimen compared to an example published in Felix Lorenz's classic Textbook: Cowries: A Guide to the Gastropod Family Cypraeidae; Volume 2, Page 646, Plate 319, No. 16. Collected by Scuba diver 10-12 meters under rocks surrounded by seaweed in the 80s off Noumea, New Caledonia. The shell exhibits a minuscule blemish on the anterior labral ramp and a few slight silt stains in the aperture teeth. Grade: F+++/GEM minus. |
