| Family | Cypraeidae |
| Name | Neobernaya spadicea - RARE ALGAE WHITE , Swainson 1823 |
| Size | 41.8 mm |
| Locality | San Pedro, California |
| Note | The algae white edition of this classic Southern California cowry is rarely encountered in any of the Southern California and Baja populations. The subnacre algae is fully glazed with a thick nacre, covering the chestnut brown dorsal blotch like snow and leaving exposed a subdued dark ringed halo below the snow white dorsal blotch. The rare specimen exhibits flawless extremities and a flawless porcelain/ivory white base. Taken by Scuba diver Paul Kanner at 25 meters off I.W. Reef (Izor's Area), San Pedro, California in the southern Horseshoe Kelp area in 6/2010. The specimen presents with only negligible dorsal blemishes. Grade: GEM minus. |
