| Note | This is one of the two massive brute shells that I am listing in this auction. At 128.8 mm lenght, 90.0 mm wide and 260 grams of weight this tigris is above the 5-inch thershold and the standard size range for schilderiana. Twenty years ago I did run into this shell which was sitting in a showcase of a turists' shop in Wailea, Maui. The shop owner told me it was an ornament to the shop window when he bought the business in the Seventies. I was told this tigris was collected locally by somebody in the previous shop owner's family while spearfishing. It has a yellowish background covered by numerous dense small dots, a somehow unusual pattern for schilderiana (which usually shaw large black dots). I rate the quality of this shell as F+/++: there are no chips, major scratches or fish bites, but the gloss has micro-scratches of wear-and-tear origin from its early life out of the water, off the hands of careful collectors. Not gem (basically none schideriana are) but beautiful. |
