| Note | Extremely rare and unusual deep-water Spondylus trawled off southern Queensland. One of the only specimens I have seen in private collections, very few specimens have been collected, primarily during the peak of the prawning industry in Queensland during the 80's-90's. These shells have been labeled as Spondylus tenuitas by local collectors and dealers in the past, however the Holotype of that species originated from New Caledonia and I am unsure they are they same species. Impossible to acquire since the nation-wide ban on bottom trawling, no future specimens will ever be collected. Exceptional, live-taken specimen found amongst shell rubble taken by trawlers at 150m between Caloundra and Cape Moreton, Queensland. Ex coll. Annette Whitney |
