| Note | One of the rarest and most difficult to acquire members of the eastern Volutoconus complex, impossible to obtain today. Only an extremely limited number of specimens were taken during peak trawling activities in the 80's to early 2000's in the Capricorn Channel between Keppel Bay and Mackay in central Queensland. Very rare 'genuine' specimen, the majority of specimens offered as V. keppelensis are actually V. grossi. Historically treated as a form of Volutoconus grossi, V. keppelensis was seperated in a revision of the genus in 2013 by Bail & Limpus. Characterised by its ribbed protoconch (smooth in V. grossi) and narrower, tapering spire. Fantastic quality specimen with gem lip/canal and free from any growth scars. Only potential 'flaw' I can see is a small inclusion in the aperture, otherwise GEM. Live taken by prawn trawler on soft muddy bottoms at 40-50m, off Keppel Bay, central QLD. |
