| Note | SPECIAL SALE – MASTERPIECES OF THE JES COLLECTION: A MAGNIFICENT GIANT specimen of a potentially UNIQUE PALE COLOUR FORM – certainly the ONLY specimen I have ever encountered of this form, of this monumental size. Exquisite colour: early whorls delicate apricot, with caramel markings, transforming into extremely pale yellow upon later whorls, decorated with spiral bands of pure white triangular markings. Hypermature, with massively thickened shell walls, and consequent solidity and weight – an incredibly HEAVY shell in the hand; fully mature, thickened and glossed apertural lip. Extremely RARE QUALITY for the species, size, and collection method – virtual PERFECTION. The specimen was obtained via the legendary TAIWANESE TRAWLING operations undertaken off the northern coast of Australia in the 1970s. The specimen was formerly in the renowned Donald Pisor collection of San Diego, and the original Pisor label accompanies the shell. The specimen is also PUBLISHED in the book ‘Sea and Land Shells from the Don Pisor Collection’. A unique opportunity for a highly advanced Volutidae specialist to acquire a ‘museum piece’ example of an incredibly rare form, with illustrious provenance. Data: Off northern coast of Western Australia, Australia; upon sand substrate; 100-200 m; trawled; 1970s. Size: 113.9 mm. Grading: Fine+++ (extremely minimal, negligible trawl fraying to siphonal canal). Provenance: 1) Don Pisor, San Diego; 2) JES Collection; London / Melbourne. |
