| Note | SPECIAL SALE – MASTERPIECES OF THE JES COLLECTION: This SPECTACULAR GIANT is one of the LARGEST specimens ever obtained by the legendary TAIWANESE TRAWLING operations undertaken off the northern coast of Australia in the 1970s. The few known specimens of this size have become much coveted ‘collector’s items’, commanding a substantial premium. All the known examples are dead-collected, but the current specimen is of superior quality to most, especially for its size, exhibiting a near perfect apertural lip and siphonal canal. It does exhibit one typical axial disruption to the columellar side of the body whorl, (please request image if desired). The noted Taiwanese collector and dealer Huang Shin Rong ran the famed Asia Shell Shop in Taipei, and was the recipient of much of the material obtained via the 1970s Taiwanese trawling operations, including the current specimen, which he sold to Frank Rossack – the first Australian collector and dealer to travel to Taiwan to procure some of the finest and rarest specimens obtained at the time. An exceedingly rare opportunity for either an advanced Volutidae specialist, or an admirer of the world’s rarest and most exquisite seashells to acquire an outstanding giant of this mythical shell. Data: Off northern coast of Western Australia, Australia; upon sand substrate; 100-200 m; trawled; 1970s. Size: 122.4 mm. Grading: Fine+. Provenance: 1) Huang Shin Rong, Taipei; 2) Frank Rossack, Grovedale; 3) JES Collection; London / Melbourne. |
