NoteThis is the second specimen I have been able to bring to auction of this ultra-rare, recently described subspecies. Although a handful of examples of this ultra-rare form have been known to certain collectors for some years, it has only been formally described this year, (The Festivus; Vol.49; Issue 1; pp.45-47; figs.1D-F). The subspecies honours the well known Australian collector Adrian Bishop, who supplied the holotype, (SAMA D4323). The subspecies is known only from extremely deep water in the Great Australian Bight, being only obtained via trawling. According to the original description, this form differs from the nominate subspecies in six distinct ways: ?1. ... thinner, more delicate shell; 2. ... much more inflated and globular shell; 3. ... higher and more domed dorsum; 4. ... much lighter shell colour; 5. ... much paler extremities; 6. ... proportionally much larger and much better developed fossula?. I should like to add a further diagnostic feature, which appears constant throughout all material studied, that of a pure white ventrum, onto which virtually no marginal nor terminal colour extends. Pronounced dorsal malleation, indicative of complete maturity. With trawling activity in the Great Australian Bight now greatly restricted, it is unlikely that any fresh specimens will be obtained in future. Definitely for the advanced Cypraeidae specialist who wishes to secure only the second specimen ever offered at auction. Size: 34.3 mm (length). Grading: Gem. Data: Due South of Eucla, Great Australian Bight, Western Australia, Australia; upon sand/sponge substrate; trawled; 145-300 m; 1995. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London.
