Item | # 0001930154 | Family | Muricidae | Name | Pterynotus acanthopterus - ULTRA-BIG; OUTSTANDING , (Lamarck, 1816) |
Size | 86.2 mm, w/o |
Locality | Australia |
Note | Unquestionably one of the BEST ultra-large acanthopterus I have ever handled. All principal varices in a superb state of preservation, including the ultra-fine fluting upon the undersides. (Note: The indentations upon each varix represent their natural structure, not damage.) Incredibly clean for the species, with no encrustation. The apex has escaped the erosion typical of ultra-large examples, and the mammillate protoconch is intact. Perfect principal and secondary siphonal canals. Rich ochre throughout, with café au lait varical undersides, and pure white aperture. Specimens of this size and quality are now obtainable only from old collections. Impossible to get better. Definitely for the Muricidae specialist or admirer of exquisite seashells. Size: 86.2 mm (length). Grading: F++++; w/o. Data: Dampier, Western Australia, Australia; upon mud/sand substrate, near reef at extreme seasonal low tide; 1982. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London. |
