Note | SPECIAL GIANTS SALE: In this auction I am offering a special selection of giant specimens, all from the ?old days? of collecting, with many now being obtainable only from old collections. Most exhibit the imperfections associated with extreme age and size, whilst some are virtually perfect, but, in every case, they are offered upon account of their sheer size. CERATOSTOMA BURNETTI: A monumental giant from the ?old days? of collecting. Substantial damage to the secondary/dorsal varix, (see above right image), and a little spire erosion, (only to be expected of a specimen of such greatly advanced age and size), yet the remainder of the shell is in remarkably good condition. Its ventral view is spectacular, (see above left image), and is undoubtedly its best display perspective. Enormous, elongate principal ceras, (from which the species obtains its name), in perfect condition. Apex in excellent condition, with virtually no loss. Although the Korean form is still available today, I have not seen any freshly collected giants exceeding 120 mm. Perhaps such giants were depleted long ago, during early fishing at this locality? Definitely for the collector of ?wow factor? seashells. Size: 122.1 mm (length). Grading: F+. Data: Pusan Harbour, South Korea; upon sand/mud/rubble substrate; 40-60 m; trawled; 1977. |
