Note | The BEST, cleanest, most beautiful, and highest quality specimen I have ever seen. I do not collect Sponydlus, but this specimen was retained, (along with its partner which I sold in a recent auction), upon account of its singular beauty and quality. More often than not, tenellus does not form an attractive shell, yet this exquisite example dramatically disproves that rule. Its merits are four: overall form and symmetry of valves; overall balance to formation of spines; preservation of spines; colour: ultra-rich pink upon pure white to striking aesthetic effect. When one considers that the specimen was collected via trawling, its level of preservation is all the more remarkable. It is extremely rare that we may assign a ?Gem? grading to a Spondylus, but the current example warrants such distinction. Now obtainable only from old collections. For the Spondylus specialist who requires a BEST of the best example of this South-Eastern Australian endemic species. Size: 70.2 mm (longest dimension). Grading: Gem. Data: Bass Strait, off Lakes Entrance, Victoria, Australia; upon mud/sand substrate; 260 m; trawled; 1980. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London. |
