Note | EXTRA SPECIAL SALE - PART 5: Part five of my extra special sales comprised mainly of exceptional specimens from my private collection, (indicated with JES provenance in description). Another opportunity to acquire outstanding and unique seashells from one of the world’s pre-eminent collections. SEMICASSIS PYRUM SPECTABILIS: A large and superb specimen, exhibiting 'golden' substrate-influenced colour. Often mispelled as spectabile, the suffix -is is designated in Iredale's original description. (Another interesting point arises from a reading of the original description: the form offered here is typically regarded as spectabilis, although Iredale makes it plain that, in spectabilis the shell 'is much thinner, and has ... a double peripheral keel'. This description accords more with the form generally regarded as niveum. The type specimen should be examined by a Cassidae specialist.) Size: 67.3 mm (length). Grading: F++++. Data: Off Eden, New South Wales, Australia; upon mud/sand substrate; 120-160 m; trawled; 1983. |
