| Note | EXTRA SPECIAL SALE - PART 5: Part five of my extra special sales comprised mainly of exceptional specimens from my private collection, (indicated with JES provenance in description). Another opportunity to acquire outstanding and unique seashells from one of the world’s pre-eminent collections. CYPRAEA CHINENSIS VARIOLARIA: Many years ago I received this specimen amongst a small collection of Cypraea marked only 'Indian Ocean'. In preparation for this auction I have studied Lamarck's original description of 'variolaria', (now rightly considered a form of chinensis), and the current specimen accords well with Lamarck's diagnostic features for this Indian Ocean variety, especially with respect to the white margins, yellowish dorsum, and nebulous dorsal maculae. Nevertheless, I treat this example as c.f. variolaria, and leave its ultimate taxonomic status to the winning bidder to investigate. Extremely developed white marginal callosity, with pale violet maculae. Great weight to size ratio. Distinctly rhomboidal in outline when viewed from a dorsal perspective, upon account of greatly accrued shell material at the midpoint of both margins. Superb symmetrical proportions. For the advanced Cypraeidae specialist. Size: 31.2 mm (length). Grading: Gem. Data: 'Indian Ocean'. |
